Responsible Gambling Guide

Keep gambling fun and under control

Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. This guide explains how to stay in control, how to spot early warning signs, and where to get free, confidential help in the UK. You must be 18 or over to gamble.

What is responsible gambling?

It means deciding how much time and money you can afford to spend before you start, sticking to that limit, and stopping when the fun stops. Gambling should never get in the way of your work, your relationships or your bills.

Signs gambling may be becoming a problem

  • Spending more time or money than you planned, or hiding how much you gamble.
  • Chasing losses, or gambling to win back money you have lost.
  • Borrowing money, or using money meant for bills, rent or food.
  • Feeling restless, anxious or irritable when you try to cut down.
  • Thinking about gambling most of the time, or gambling to escape stress or low mood.

Practical ways to stay in control

  • Set a budget you can afford to lose before you play, and never go over it.
  • Set time limits and take regular breaks. Use reality checks if the operator offers them.
  • Use the tools UK-licensed operators must provide: deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion.
  • Never chase losses. A loss does not make the next result more likely to be a win.
  • Do not gamble with borrowed money. UK-licensed operators are not allowed to accept credit cards for gambling.
  • Avoid gambling when you are upset, stressed or have been drinking.
  • Remember the maths. RTP is a long-run average across millions of rounds, not a promise about your session.

Check the operator is licensed

Only play with operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. You can check an operator on the register at gamblingcommission.gov.uk. This site reviews games for information and does not hold a gambling licence.
